Going around Sheffield

Ok this is my idea, as i said in my previous post i want to have old and new Sheffield containing random parts of Sheffield that only people from Sheffield would know about, some things maybe not being amazing but only what Sheffield have and then putting that into a projection. However one advantage i do have is that my Father works at a steel rolling mill and hopefully i will be able to go and film/take pictures of what they do which being a steel city, once the biggest producer of steel in the world needs to be a key feature in my projection. This plays to my advantage as hot steel is very bright which links in with my idea of blinding light.

It would be fantastic to catch this in action.

Really i just want to capture what is great about Sheffield and putting it in a projection.

Sheffield History and iconic places to film

I thought it was time to start thinking about what i need to do, after all i can safely say i'm not short on ramblings, i mean research. Right here is what i'm thinking of doing.

I am drawn strongly towards doing the projection for the "Twilight Finale" which is meant to revolves around the history of Sheffield, i have some idea on what i would like to do. However i know i am doing motion graphics but i feel a hand drawn style animation wouldn't really fit in at this type of event. One idea was having a then and now flashback kind of thing, things like that have always interested me.

My idea is to find many pics of old iconic areas of Sheffield or maybe not so iconic and do a transition to my pictures taken in the same area.

Iconic areas of Sheffield, with living in Sheffield i know where to look in Sheffield for places of interest, which is lucky.

That's all i can think of right about now, I'm going to be cheeky and talk to my granddad, i'm sure he knows some sneaky places that exist or used to that are unique to Sheffield.

Jazz

One of the types of music that may be played at this shindig might be a good ol' fashioned Big band. I didn't know what a big band was until a few days ago, then i found out i did but i just didn't realize it was called a big band. I like to think of them as an overly relaxed orchestra with percussion solos, which i suppose is exactly what they were going for.

This is one of those golden oldies that you can't help but move your feet to. In all seriousness however this is a sound that really reminds me of the style it brought at the time.

An extremely bright and soulful look that accompanied Jazz and envisaged the feel that the music made people feel. Another art style that jazz makes me think about is cubism, but a later form that was branched off from it. It was used in cartoons like the Jetsons and heavily in advertising in the early 50's, also recently... ish in the film incredibles.

I may not look into jazz anymore, but it is just nice to have it in the blog.

The dreaded workcheck

Yesterday i had my first work check with Toby, I was told i'm on the right path with research but i need to start putting my finding into practice. I also need to start narrowing down my findings onto one idea and expanding on that. We also got a more grounded idea of what the festival may entail, Orchestral, Jazz, Shakespearian plays with a Sheffield twist, Choir, Swing, None vocal, Brass band and some abstract unconventional music. None of this is 100% accurate but it just gives us a good idea of what to expect rather than blinding stabbing in the dark. With my work check me and toby also looked at some more visual examples of musical concerts and what mood might go along with certain aspects of the performances.

However one thing that is pretty much certain and is going to be performed at then end of all the other acts is a grand finale of all the acts that have taken part in the show. This will be a massive event within itself and should be extremely creative, exciting and overwhelming.

Some of the examples i looked at for the "Cutlery Concerto" were more abstract was of producing music, as the name gives the impression that instead of instruments they will possibly be using cutlery to create their masterpiece.

This crazy band play with anything they can find, giving the whole act a very urban messy feel even though a lot of blood and sweat has obviously gone into creating a spectacular performance like no other.

This band may use everyday objects to perform a part of their music, but they mix it with actual instruments once more creating a very unique sound.

I saw this a long time ago, i may be looking into abstract ways of creating music a little to much but i had to include the spectacularly breath taking performance.... just amazing.

We also talked about how types of music might make you feel, for me it's mainly colour. I picture colours floating when i listen to classical, yet when i listen to say STOMP i picture more aggressive visceral sharp colours that flash and indent the screen.
After this i was told i needed a more solid direction to go in, i need to pic one idea an just build upon it, i try to much all the ideas will become very thinly spread and i wont have enough time to make my final outcome a success.

Finally got some letters to modify

It turns out the person before me didn't send letters to me, don't know why but i talked to the person before him and i had letters to modify straight away. I was finally able to contribute to the crowd speak workshop and will soon be able to compile an animation knowing i had some involvement. HAZZAR.
I have tried to modify as many letters as i possibly could in the short space of time i had and i am glad because it was extremely enjoyable.

What does alight make you think of?

When i think of alight make me think of? Well first off i think of sunsets and oddly enough my holidays in other countries, it certainly doesn't make me think of a musical extravaganza. It also makes me think of a city "alight" at night with hussle and bussle or glare.

Man that looks bright. Wouldn't want to be driving towards that bad boy.

Wish i was there and not here... oh well at least i have the internet now.

This is what i think of when someone says alight to me, most people think of fire and setting things "alight" but for me it gives me images of busy streets at night that don't seem so much like night because off all the lights being so bright it could be almost morning. This may be because i do prefer the night to day like some sort of vampire but i do, it always seems more exciting, like it could last forever.

Also please leave comments on this post to let me know what you think of or feel about the word "Alight" i would be incredibly interested to know.
