Today we met the client, the lecture was very confusing and hard to get my head round but overall it put some of my fears to rest, from what I've gathered we have to design anything by any means necessary based on pretty much whatever we want within reason as long as we don't use the Olympics logo or mention the Olympics in any way shape or form, awesome. What was mentioned that i can remember (it was a lot of info for an hour and some people behind me wouldn't shut up) was that Alight during the day will mainly revolve around everyone and anyone. Alight Twilight will revolve around family and friends of the band performing, and same for Alight Night.
We were also told that there will be BIG screens in the hubs and in Sheffield city hall, this gives us the opportunity to really show the public what we can do, even though the screens are there we have been told we cant really make a slideshow but more give a sequence of images that will be played like a slideshow. I was particularly drawn to the idea of the history of Sheffield which would be played at city hall along with a synced up version of whatever is on screen in the background. We can either use existing images of Sheffield from 1800's towards present day or we can create our own. I must be honest however, the lecture was very vague and I'm still not really 100% sure what we're actually meant to be doing, but i have and idea so i suppose that's a start.
So here's some research i think:
The history of Sheffield
This is the impression i get of city hall on the night on Alight, very posh, very swanky and very well organised. so i need something to fit in with this, a history of Sheffield the fits in with the setting.
This is Sheffield city hall.... bout it, looks nice.
The only problem i feel i am facing is lack of information at this point, we are 2 weeks into the brief and i seem to be none the wiser, there may be 1 or 2 screens in the city hall but it's not clear. Another concern i am having is about the Hubs in Sheffield, can i use the same thing in the city hall for the hubs also? Is it appropriate for students to be viewing the same thing as an upper class theater? Who knows. Either way I'm still drawn towards the idea of doing "The History of Sheffield".
There are many things i could touche upon for the History of Sheffield, such as the Sheffield Floods, no idea when they happened but i did some sort of play in school about it once. Obviously the massive steel boom we had, developing steel for not just Britain but the entire world. The aerial bombardment from the Luftwaffe or for you history buffs, the Blitz. The expansion of Sheffield in General, possibly the moving of the city hall. The Trams. The opening of both Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam university. Maybe a transition from old Sheffield to present day Sheffield, the expression "Back when all this were fields, comes to mind". I could also touche upon how the steel industry has dwindled over the years, i know this quite well as my father works/worked in the steel industry within Sheffield. Mining, depression, 80's ect ect ect....
Posters/Leaflets
Going back to the lecture, we were told we could design some leaflets to be handed out all over Sheffield/Yorkshire. These leaflets had to inform the person about Alright but also about the events happening during the day, these event include music parades and even more music. So i either have to give the leaflet a musical identity or a cultural/Yorkshire identity. At this point in time i have no clue of how to approach that, this is why I'm blogging.
Some research on posters/leaflets:
With looking at these examples, it seems most music posters are more text based the image based, however this doesn't mean you cant use the text in interesting ways as shown in these examples. Text can be twisted and turned to make a text based poster not only extremely interesting but also effective while it impresses. I feel like i should be possibly designing a poster for this brief, just because:
1. I hardly ever get chance/use text.
2. I'm not very confident with using text so it's prime time to start.
